How the Green Energy Transition Tool calculates results
This page summarises the formulas and scenario logic from METHODOLOGY.md. It contains no submitted questionnaire data, no port names, and no port-specific benchmark values.
Scoring formula
The Port Score combines five self-assessed factors. Each factor is scored from 1 to 5, multiplied by its weight, summed, and mapped to a 0-100 scale.

Emission formula
The deterministic engine converts fuel, power, and operating hours into emissions using admin-editable reference factors.
N = fuel / (relativeConsumption * hours)
CO2 = CO2_factor * fuelMass
NOx, CO, PM = factor * averagePower * hours
Energy and cost KPIs
Energy KPIs aggregate electricity, fuels, gas, and on-site renewable generation. Cost KPIs multiply consumption by the submitted tariffs.
- Total annual energy = electricity + fuel energy equivalents.
- Renewable share = renewable energy / total energy.
- Energy intensity = total energy / throughput.
- Emission intensity = CO2 / throughput.
Technology catalogue
Scenario toggles and recommendation rankings are based on the following technology catalogue.
Shore power for vessels at berth
Equipment electrification
Renewable integration such as PV, wind, and hybrid systems
Digital energy management and smart-port analytics
Alternative-fuels readiness for LNG, hydrogen, biofuels, methanol, or ammonia
Scenario logic
The engine generates Conservative, Optimal, and Risky transition pathways. Each pathway applies electrification, renewable share, investment level, deployment rate, target year, and uncertainty assumptions to the baseline.
Conservative
Lower investment, slower deployment, smaller electrification and renewable changes.
Optimal
Balanced investment and deployment assumptions.
Risky
High ambition, faster deployment, larger uncertainty margins.
Each scenario returns projected energy mix, CO2 trajectory, cost trajectory, resulting KPIs, and financial indicators. Financial outputs are indicative and should be reviewed before investment decisions.
